We drove cross-country on a route that took us through the center of the country. We stopped in St. Louis where we ate lunch on the Mississippi River - on one of the riverboats (gambling casinos) that are moored there.

Continuing westward we drove on I-70 into and through the Rocky Mountains...
On the western side of the Rockies we drove out into Utah. Utah is a state full of sandstone figures that shine with a variety of colors. Everywhere we looked there were fantastic shapes sculpted by the weather and by rivers running over the land...
From Utah we began to lose altitude as we drove through Nevada (with a stop in Las Vegas for lunch). Driving across the Mojave desert we arrived in Ojai eight days after leaving the east coast.
