Salt Lake City February 2002 In February, 2002, we drove from Ojai to Salt Lake City. The trip took us across the high Mojave desert, beginning in California. Travelling I-15 north we drove through California, Nevada, a bit of Arizona, and more than half way up the State of Utah. The altitude of the desert ranged from about 1300 feet above sea level in California to over 4000 feet in southern Utah. The northern part of the state is mountainous. We stayed overnight in Mesquite, Nevada. It's located about 70 miles north of Las Vegas and is in the high Mojave Desert. We stopped at the Oasis Resort and Casino - it really was an oasis in the midst of dry desert... ![]() Salt Lake City is a sprawling metropolitan area stretching along the Great Salt Lake and cradled between two mountain ranges.
