February 2002
In February, 2002, we drove from Ojai to Salt Lake City. The trip took us across the high Mojave desert, beginning in California. Travelling I-15 north we drove through California, Nevada, a bit of Arizona, and more than half way up the State of Utah. The altitude of the desert ranged from about 1300 feet above sea level in California to over 4000 feet in southern Utah. The northern part of the state is mountainous.
We stayed overnight in Mesquite, Nevada. It's located about 70 miles north of Las Vegas and is in the high Mojave Desert. We stopped at the Oasis Resort and Casino - it really was an oasis in the midst of dry desert...

While in Salt Lake we stayed with Jon's aunt, Rita, and her friend, Caroline, at Caroline's condo. Very comfortable and near the ski areas...
We spent a day wandering around the downtown area of Salt Lake City visiting the Temple of the Church of Latter day Saints (Mormons)...
Driving back to Ojai we were treated to a magnificent desert sunset...
